Off-Shore Cruising on a 42' Yatch

This activity is best done during the North-east monsoon period of October through April. Minimum duration 4 days preferably though six or more.
Destinations available from Kilifi: - To the north; Kiwayu, Lamu and Malindi. To the south: Mtwapa, Mombassa, Shimoni. In Tanzania: Pemba, Zanzibar and Dar-es-salaam. Further a field; Seychelles and the Comoros. |

About the boat
Built in Taiwan in 1984 to a Bob Perry design. Centre cockpit, heavy displacement, (15T), long keeled, masthead rigged ketch. Originally used in the Pacific and later around the north and west coasts of Australia. Fitted with 40 hp Perkins 4.108 engine, she has a full set, (new 1999), full batten sails (main and mizzen), and a 130% roller genoa, and a cruising spinnaker. 30 kg CQR anchor on all chain rode, plus 2 others, (lighter). 600 l water, 400 l fuel. Sleeps 5 in bunks, plus an additional 4 in the saloon.
Equipment includes 2 toilets / showers, a 3 burner gas stove w/ oven. Hydraulic steering with auto helm, VHF radio, satellite telephone, GPS x 2, log, basic wind instruments, depth sounder, 500 amp battery bank with wind and solar power generators. Full set of charts for the East African coast. 6 man life raft, and much else. Fitted out with Snorkel gear for 4 pax, 2 rods for deep sea fishing and trolling lines as required. Life preservers for up to 10 participants, plus safety harnesses for use on deck.
Activities based from the boat
1. Sea Kayaking : Explore the anchorage's from a half day, to overnight or more with camps on a remote beach. 4 available. Kenya coast only. Best in Lamu / Kiwayu and Shimoni.
2. Scuba Diving : Best in Shimoni and Pemba, but also in Lamu, Malindi and Kilifi.
3. Deep sea Fishing : This activity available any time whilst sailing. 2 rods, plus hand lines.
4. Snorkelling : Equipment on board for 4 clients at a time. Superb at Shimoni and Pemba, also Malindi, Kiwayu
Other things to do. All participants will gain, and if required, log, experience in off-shore day and night sailing and will be expected to fully participate in all aspects of sailing, from setting / trimming sails, helming and watch-keeping. Off watch crew will be responsible for all food preparation and cooking, plus small boat housekeeping requirements. If there is interest shown I will give instruction in coastal navigation, charts, currents and use of the GPS, together with basics about boat handling, rigging, sail trim etc. Other subjects including weather, aqua fauna, local history etc.
Snorkel diving, (4 at a time), and 2 deep sea fishing rods - 55 lb. test. Nov - March is the best fishing season, and one would expect to take at least a couple of fish each day, Barracuda, sailfish, marlin, shark, bonito and tuna are all likely.
